Qualters' Homestead Mural Restoration, acrylic on billboard vinyl, 2024

In 2023, I was commissioned by Mark Fallon of the Steel Valley Historical Society to restore a 20 by 30 ft. mural originally by Robert Qualters. Mr. Qualters is a renowned painter and dear family friend. The composition depicts scenes of historic Homestead, PA and features U.S. landmarks that were built with Homestead Steel. The project took over 500 hours to complete: from researching, cleaning, repairing and priming the vinyl material to painting and sealing the artwork (and a few studio visits from Mr. Q!). I restored the intricate composition emulating Qualters' characteristic vibrant colors and impressionistic style. In collaboration with Fallon and Qualters, we took this opportunity to make a few edits to the composition, incorporating the Three Sisters Bridges, Chiodos Tavern as well as our sponsors: The Waterfront and Golden Age Beer Co. The mural is installed at Golden Age Beer Co. in Homestead, PA. Please find more about the project in this Pittsburgh Union Press article.

Zapata Mural, acrylic on wooden doors, 2021

I was commissioned by sculptor, mosaicist and violin-maker James Simon, to paint something “Zapata themed” on the front of his home-studio in Uptown Pittsburgh, PA., as a tribute to the years he spent living in Morelos (where Zapata is from and remains a local hero). This mural layers imagery of Zapata on his horse, a map of the Zapatistas' routes, as well as shapes derived from a topographical map of Morelos and from “Revolución” posters. It is painted on 100 year old wooden doors that would have existed by the end of the Mexican Revolution and is surrounded by other beautiful works of public art both created and curated by Simon. You can experience “Art on Gist St.” by going to 305 Gist St., Pittsburgh, PA, 15219, or explore virtually here on Google Maps Street View (they happened to capture me mid-painting in 2021).
